At the time of Solstice and the first turning of winter, I recall the realm of the Snowy Owl in the boreal regions at the top of the world. They nest on the cold ground and hunt by the rippling light of the Aurora Borealis in Arctic starry nights.
Once upon a time, while winter dog mushing in this region of crystal clear vividness and sparkling awe, I was given a secret that suggests their capacity to be a guardian of the night.
In looking back through time, what we do know is that in Grecian mythology, Athena took Owl as her symbol for the art of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civility, law and social & justice, strength, strategy, and artistic skills. That's a tall order for any totem! Yet Owl has the gift of 'foreseeing', has acute awareness and is an invisible see-er in the dark and therefore has strategic skill.
When we seek our own fertile darkness of spacious possibility and non-distraction, we may recall our more ineffable knowing of owl. We may remember that wise old owl sees into the darkness with radiant golden eyes. Yet the depth of the owls' ability includes bringing what is dark into the light and importantly the ability to live in the dark itself. This is part of the secret, and an inspiration for our own bravery in times such as these, when we feel our sad collective tragedies and painful personal suffering.
May owl's wisdom encourage us to cultivate the capacity to live in the 'bright' darkness of mystery and unknowing. Acknowledging in our radiant living, a luminous shine of space and openness, which allows for curiosity and healing of shadow aspects within our own growing nature. This deep space in essence has powerfully peaceful teachings and un-potentiated qualities which nourish and enrich as radiance itself.
The open secret shared with me through a snowy owl's feather is this. She carries the shape of a small brown heart on each white feather as she flies into the dark.
In the deep space of gentle winter nesting and return of the Solstice~New Year's light, may we rest together in what may be our true home, the light within our own hearts.
With great joy and confidence in your winged ways of Being in this wild, beautiful and suffering world. Take Heart!
