In the Asian lunar calendar, February 8, 2016 to January 27, 2017, we're accompanied by the Fire Monkey, leaping branch to branch in the dark forest of amplified and fiery polarities. We don't need to look far or feel wide to notice signs of impermanence we 'thought' were stable about our Tree of Life; it's imagined and anticipated growth personally and collectively.
Spunky monkey has had its way with us through distraction, shapeshifting, deceitfulness, arrogance, yet also through creativity and innovation. Leaping together tree to tree in this first six months of the lunar Year of the Monkey, with its horrific images of terror, wildfires, frantic fear-driven speech, has perhaps taught us painfully more about ourselves and the chaotic node in which we 'monkey.'
A teaching called "world in mind" suggests how our perceptions and patterns are the cause of our problems within and in the world around us. We can see and feel more keenly and consciously perhaps, our projected fears, sorrows, and broken idealizations. Most likely we notice our compassion for others can become an enflamed need to help, at the risk of not including our own needs. Thus contributing to compassion fatigue and burn out, rather than full compassion which includes ourselves and others in a balanced way.
Yet, as wisdom arises from our woundedness, look at Maturing Monkey resting on the ascending path of heightened view, and ripening wisdom. Notice monkey reaching for nourishing golden fruit!
I appreciate how David Whyte the poet speaks of maturity:
"Maturity beckons, asking us to be larger, more fluid, more elemental, less cornered, less unilateral, a living conversational intuition between the inherited story, the one we are privileged to inhabit and the one, if we are large enough and broad enough, moveable enough and even, here enough, just, astonishingly, about to occur."
I invite you to join with me as we rest, restore and mature. Each, tasting wise luscious knowing, and garnering resiliencies and resources. Together, we respond to a call to action arising from Being. Engaging a maturing harvest of confident intelligence, quick-witted nimbleness, dignified optimism, social agility and more. Qualities we pluck and share from the most mature aspects of the Fire Monkey year. What golden fruit would you like encouragement picking?
In these Fall offerings - Aging Lively and Wisely: Revisioning Our Lives (Tues eves Sept 20-Nov 1), Transforming Trauma in Nature (Sept 23-25) and I Ching: Nature's Mirroring Wisdom (new dates coming soon) - and in private therapy and mentoring sessions, we explore ripening golden fruit of our wisdom heartmind.
