What are we inspired to inaugurate within ourselves, while marching in rhythm with the drumbeat of our awakened hearts?
What refresh commitments and vows urge us in our empowered awakening?
I find this a relevant question, as we align with spiritual practices and activate our "speaking truth to power" in allegiance with humane values.
To in-"augur"-ate ourselves, implies that we study signs which herald and foretell an auspicious and/or ineffectual outcome of our own behavior.
In the classical Roman world, the main role of an Augur (or priestess) was to interpret the will of the gods by studying the flight of birds: what kind of birds, whether they fly in groups or alone, in song or silence, and the direction of their flight. This was known as "taking the auspices." From that root, comes the word auspicious.
What is auspicious about in'augur'ating ourselves is that we turn within to consult our 'inner god/goddess', our secret undamaged self. To read the signs in accordance with what we know to be our most authentic dedication to the truth. Embodied as our True Nature, Wisdom Self, Nondual presence, God Self, and other ways of naming our vast and luminous Wisdom Presence.
We may choose to inaugurate ourselves as an inner act of strength. To touch our truth stone at a time when it's hard to discern the nature of reality from illusion, both within and in the collective commons. Too, we might inaugurate ourselves into marveling at the ineffable beauty and goodness found everywhere and in everything, yet co-emergent with cascading crises.
Perhaps we inaugurate ourselves in creating vows based on values. Here are a few offered by Josh Bartok, a Zen teacher, as examples of potential personal vows. (These are simply examples. Please acknowledge your own words are always most powerful and initiating of compassionate actions.)
I value listening fully and speaking openly, remembering that truth is vastly larger than what arises in my mind and that "I don't know" is often the actual fact of the matter.
I value finding a way to work with my mind even amid painful conditions, both inner and outer.
I value mutuality and commitment in relationships, remembering the support and stability that loving relationships bring; I value attending to issues of gender oppression and equality.
I value cultivating a sense of enoughness with regard to material, relational, and spiritual attainments.
I value entrusting to the universe what belongs to the universe and not arrogating it for myself.
You'll find more examples of vows based on values on my website. I encourage you to consider their essence beyond the wording and see what fits for you.
Transculturally, birds represent in our psyche, spiritual messengers as they fly through the heavens bringing signs. In Asian astrology, we enter the Year of the Fire Bird ~Phoenix ~Rooster, which emphasizes transformation, planning, waking up and overcoming obstacles -transmuting in fire and arising out of the fire!
What do you proclaim at dawn in your innermost heart for the benefit of all? What initiating inaugural vows call your name?
Please join me in befriending ourselves and others in this tumultuous and arousing time of inquiry as we encounter the 'small deaths' inherent in threshold crossings and transitions.
